Tai Chi / Qi Gong / Taoist Meditation

Taoism practices are originated in China hundreds of years ago and are well-known among the Chinese for improving health and enhancing longevity. In this class you will learn the series of slow Qigong /Tai Chi movements that will improve flexibility, balance, body awareness, and relieve stress.

The movements are taught one at a time and explained in detail. Age or physical condition are not a factor in learning Qigong/Tai Chi and no special clothing, shoes, or equipment are needed. Please come to class wearing clothes you are comfortable moving in.

Taoist meditation methods have many points in common with Hindu and Buddhist systems, but the Taoist way is less abstract and far more down-to-earth than the contemplative traditions which evolved in India. The primary hallmark of Taoist meditation is the generation, transformation, and circulation of internal energy. Once the meditator has 'achieved energy' (deh-chee), it can be applied to promoting health and longevity, nurturing the 'spiritual embryo' of immortality, martial arts, healing, painting and poetry, sensual self-indulgence, or whatever else the adept wishes to do with it.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi or Taijiquan is an ancient Chinese martial art which is practiced for both defense training and for its health benefits. It is more commonly known for its practice of graceful form of exercise, involving a series of movements performed in a slow and focused manner, accompanied by deep breathing.

Tai chi, also called tai chi chuan, is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion.

Tai chi has many different styles. Each style may have its own subtle emphasis on various tai chi principles and methods. There are also variations within each style. Some may focus on health maintenance, while others focus on the martial arts aspect of tai chi.

Medical research has found evidence that Tai Chi is helpful for improving balance and for general physical health, and its is associated with general health benefits in older people.

Qi Gong

Or Chi Kung ("Life Energy Cultivation")

A practice of aligning body, breath, and mind for health, meditation, and martial arts training. With roots in Chinese medicine, philsophy, and martial arts, Qi Gong is traditionally viewed as a practice to cultivate and balance qi (chi) or what has been translated as "life energy".

According to Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucian philosophy, respectively, qigong allows access to higher realms of awareness, awakens one's "true nature", and helps develop human potential.

Qigong practice typically involves moving meditation, coordinating slow flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing, calm meditative state of mind massage, chanting, sound meditation, and non-contact treatments, performed in a broad array of body postures.

Qi gong is practiced for recreation, exercise and relaxation, preventive medicine and self-healing, complementary and alternative medicine, meditation and self-cultivation, and training for martial arts.
